A friends mom was excited that the younger generation is quilting and sent them over with some fabric (yellows, greens, blues)... so I started a random quilt. I've been wanting to make a broken star quilt for a while, so I worked the fabric into a broken star idea (rippling colour).
I need to get some background material before I can go much further. I'll already be having some y seams in there. I'm thinking a dark grey background fabric. Below are the progress pictures! I also got a chance over December to extend the Mystery Quilt top to be a larger Queen mattress sized quilt top.
I wasn't sure how the mystery quilt was going to work out so I didn't want to plan to make the queen sized quilt, but it turned out beautifully, so I added borders to up size it to a normal use size quilt. I now have a very beautiful winter theme quilt that I can add into the rotation! I am going to try to complete it as a duvet cover as winter here in Edmonton is... cold. The heavy duvet is always welcome, and no amount of thin quilt batting will suffice. HAHAH! It is nice to finish things that have been sitting in a project box for a long time. I wasn't sure how to arrange it and finish it, so I left it until I could get my ideas together. For four years.
Our friends had us out for a boys gaming night, and girls crafting night, so I took along bits of this quilt (paper piecing) to force myself to get 'er done. The paper piecing came together quite nicely, and I finished all of the remaining ones while at the crafting night. Then I helped another girl get caught up on her Cora's Quilts - Mystery Quilt. It was Christmas fabric and she had fallen behind. We all pitched together and got her quite a bit further!! The same weekend, friends of ours were up for a visit from Calgary (thanks for visiting guys!) and weren't up for much other than hanging out in the basement, so I was able to keep on going. I sat for a bit considering how to get the rest of the layout together (changed ideas about 10 times), and got to sewing. Now, I have finished the quilt top for the Japanese style quilt that I've been hesitating on since I bought Aiko's Garden fabrics so long ago! And I love the final layout! Celebrated vacation yesterday by walking the pooch in the river valley. It was snowing gently, and only a little bit cold (I couldn't feel my legs by the end of the 3k walk). Ginger had a blast!
Work Year end was cramping my style! I got a few things done over the last few weeks, but didn't have time to post about them! I'll post them out over the next few days as I am now ON VACATION!!! The first simple one was a finish of the BOM I've been doing through Quiltessentials Co. in St. Albert. I completed the December block and did a bit of a layout for the full quilt. Apparently with the 2016 BOM they will have some good coordinating background fabric, so depending what that is (if it is gilded, I'll likely pass), I may go with it or search out something I like better. Photos of December, rough layout on the floor, and rough sketch for final are below! Sorry about the hand shadow; my camera apparently won't let me force flash to go off, it is no flash or auto...I guess I need to figure out how to put my finger over the light sensor to trick it. My general plan for the layout is to go from the blocks with highest value to lowest value across the quilt. I have some spare strips of each fabric so I can ad the gem/strings across the quilt with similar value sets.
