Around January, I start getting extremely impatient for spring to show up. This year we have had an extremely mild winter, and the last few weeks were all in the plus temperatures; very different from the usual -10 deg. C average with -40 deg. C spikes. Regardless, I started pining for gardening. So I re-potted my Key Lime, and started sweeping through seed catalogs in preparation for coming spring (and community garden meetings).
The Key Lime is recovering from the re-potting/trimming activity nicely. He has a little lime growing (1/2 inch long), and put out a new set of leaves and flowers. His original soil seemed to be entirely sand and dried out every day so he constantly dropped any fruit he managed to start. I re-potted him in cactus soil and gave him a fruit tree fertilizer spike, and it seems to stay moist for about a week and has nutrients available, letting him actually produce fruit! Success! West Coast seeds always makes me want too many things, and the community garden members are no different. We met last week to make the common bed planting plan and had about $100 budget for seeds. Our first cut of wants was around $160; we're working on trimming and negotiating for a bigger budget :D It took a bit, but I caught up on my BOM. I may have to make a new January, apparently their instructions were wrong; so I guess the year will have 13 BOMs.
We used Chinese new year as a great excuse to try some home cooked Chinese food with Friends. I found a great foody person's blog - The Woks of Life and got a few recipes to try out. It required a trip to T&T's; which is always fun, and ends up with way too many yummy things being purchased.
I made BBQ pork buns as they are Jesse's favorite thing in the world ever ever ever, and coconut buns as they are my favorite thing in the world ever ever ever, and some Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce. The BBQ pork buns were super delicious, and the recipe was not that complicated as it assumes you are buying the pork already cooked. The coconut buns were wonderfully yummy, but I had some issues with the top strips; I'm not sure exactly how I got a 3 ingredient mix to go so wrong, but it wasn't the right consistency. The buns were amazing anyways though, and I'll likely be making them again! |
