I've been renting at Sparrow Studioz for a while, and it is somewhat inconvenient as I have a day job. Rental wasn't working for me, and there was a conveniently timed sale on the smaller units... so I am the proud new owner of an APQS Lenni long arm! Cost of the machine vs. rental puts it at 30 quilts breakeven; I seem to make about 5 a year, so it might be a stretch to say it will break even, but makes up for the convenience of being able to quilt in the evenings when I have time rather than having to stock up for a weekend of solid rental/quilting.
I bought the cheapest solid cotton I could find so that I can do a bunch of practice stitching prior to loading up one of my pieced quilts to go hard on quilting. It is a seafoam blue/green and it is looking awesome so far. I was worried I'd have issues with the King Tut cotton as primarily people seem to use polyester thread on the long arms. The manual says I should be using a horizontal thread arm, but I don't appear to be having any issues with the thread on the normal feeder arm. Jammed this one out in one day, happily all of my planning notes were correct so I didn't have to re-cut anything!
It is 90" x 90" and too big to hang up for good pictures :) The weather was windy so I couldn't do yard cleanup, but I could spend the day quilting!
I put a focused effort into finishing the Paint Drips My Way quilt top as it is for a friend who is graduating in about 2 weeks. The top went together nicely, I took pictures, then I noticed a mistake and had to do some modifications :D All is good now, and the quilt top is lovely! Photos available: https://flic.kr/s/aHskxHx7GN I hammered through the Bees in the garden top, it looks lovely!
I had intended it to stay just log cabin, but ran out of the light colour. I had to improvise and I think I did quite well :D Additional pics are on Flickr: Bees in he Garden |
